16 ESSENTIAL ITEMS TO PACK IN YOUR CARRY-ON
16 ESSENTIAL ITEMS TO PACK IN YOUR CARRY-ON
Packing for a trip is not only about technique and maximizing luggage space. It is also about wisely deciding what to place in your carry-on instead of your checked luggage. Continue reading to see why this is important. Realistically, no airline guarantees a 100% perfect service, as we hope. On this account, travel mishaps such as lost luggage, flight delays, and cancellations are actual possibilities because of bad weather, mechanical, or other travel-related issues. This then results in long airport layovers. Regretfully, losing your valuables or inaccessibility to your essential items will be emotionally and financially disadvantageous. Unorganized packing is one of the travel mistakes you should not make. So, what and how should you select the essential items for your carry-on? I will share my top 16 essential items to pack in your carry-on instead of your checked luggage.

16 ESSENTIAL ITEMS TO PACK IN YOUR CARRY-ON
Be mindful that your airline will have your checked luggage, so if there are any flight adjustments, the contents will be inaccessible to you if you need them. So, be sensible and well-prepared for any such occurrences. Remember, your carry-on extends to your free “personal item” (man bag or handbag) and not just your 8 kg – 10 kg bag. Therefore, pack as many essentials in both without exceeding the maximum stipulated weight.

1. Comfy Shoes
A word of advice to the female newbie traveller, wear your heaviest boots or stilettos on the flight. Once on board, change into comfy shoes, especially if you are on a long flight. (These lightweight flat ballerina shoes fit in a tiny pouch almost the same size as a wallet). They are not only for onboard comfort, washroom visits and trudging through those gigantic airports, but you have a backup pair in case of a shoe malfunction to/at/from the airport.
2.Entertainment
Bring along some form of entertainment in your carry-on. It will dispel some mundane time spent in transit, long layovers at the airport, and during long flights. Anything entertaining or that constructively occupies your time is good. Whether it is a travel book or a kindle, listening to music on your iPod, or playing games on your iPad or tablet. It does not matter, prepare to pass the time with your choice of entertainment.

3. Phone Charger and Power Bank
Both gadgets are must-haves in your carry-on. Before boarding, you will probably need to charge your phone and your Power bank at the airport if you are on a long layover. You can also recharge your phone on some planes (if they have a charging port).
The Power bank is super convenient when you need to charge your phone but don’t have access to an electrical outlet, a charging port, or when there is a blackout. So recharge it after every use, and always keep it fully charged. It is a lifesaver.
4. Expensive, Fragile and Valuable Items
Do not risk losing your valuables like jewelry, valuable coins, etc., in your checked luggage. For example, gadgets like expensive iPads/tablets, laptops, and cameras should always be in your carry-on. Some professional cameras are heavy, but there are ways around carrying them (hang them with a strap around your neck). You risk broken camera parts or lenses because of the rough handling of your luggage by these airport/airline handlers.

5. A Change of Clothing
A definite must-have item in your carry-on is a change of clothing or even a pair of underwear. When there are flight cancellations or delays, you prolong your time at the airport, sometimes into an extra day.
Therefore, being able to freshen up and at least change your undergarments is comforting and hygienic. Other than this, lost luggage and or late delivery of your luggage are possibilities. For this reason, you want to have a change of clothes on arrival at your accommodation, until you receive your luggage, or shop for replacements.

6. A Pen
You will need a pen when travelling, so make sure you have one in your bag. As soon as you get to the airport you will need it at the airline’s check-in counter, and also on board the plane, to complete Customs/T.S.A/airline forms. Because of Covid-19, everyone’s a germaphobe. As a result, they avoid using a public pen, and other passengers will be hesitant to lend you theirs.
7. Travel Umbrella
A small umbrella is a necessity in any handbag, carry-on or not. I do not travel or leave home without one. The wind-resistant travel umbrella is perfect for a windy environment and will not flip upside down, exposing you to the elements. Many airlines shuttle passengers to/from the tarmac to embark/disembark flights. We all know the tarmac is unsheltered, so you are exposed to the elements while awaiting your turn to enter the aircraft.
I can recall several occasions when my travel umbrella came in handy while waiting to board the plane in a drizzle and or snow. Notwithstanding this, you may need it on rainy days to/from the airport or hotel.
8. Hat or Cap
For those who experience bad hair days during flight or have no time for hair maintenance, a cap/hat will solve that problem. No need to fuss about your hair on or off the plane! It is also an excellent idea to have a hat if you leave a warmer climate and travel to another country with a colder climate, especially when exiting the airport.
9. Vitamins and Medication
Do not, under any circumstances, put your vitamins or medications in your checked luggage. You should also travel with a copy of your prescription (if they are prescription drugs) in case of mishaps. If your flight is a long-haul one, at some point, you will need your vitamins and or medication.
Be sure to pack some antacids and pain killers (I recommend aspirin for those who are not allergic). This is not only for air pressure headaches but also prevents blood clots in the arteries, especially on long-haul flights. It is a real possibility you might need them before you get to your destination.
10.Toiletries
Another must-have in your carry-on is all your essentials, like disinfecting wipes, make-up, hand sanitizers, a mini toothbrush, toothpaste tablets, and hair and skin products. You will need these, especially for long flights or overnight layovers. Remember, airports allow all passengers one transparent zip-top bag for all their liquids, creams, and gels (3.4 oz maximum, also known as the 3-1-1 rule/bag.), The bag must not be larger than 1 quart, and you should put any items not fitting in this bag in your checked bag.
11. Healthy/favorite Snacks
Packing a snack for the flight is not something you have to remind most people to do. For sure, you want to have some of your favorite snacks. However, do not forget to add some healthy treats such as; dried fruits, nuts, protein bars, kale chips, etc.
Food comforts us physically and mentally, and in this case, financially. Because airports and airplane snacks are super expensive, and your favorites might be unavailable. Therefore, pack enough to take you throughout the journey.

12. Onboard comfort Items
Whether it is a long or short flight, onboard comfort is a priority. There are some gadgets/items which make any flight less stressful and a bit more comfortable. Here is a list of my favorite onboard items;
- An inflatable Neck pillow – (which takes up less space in your carry-on) is perfect for relaxation or sleeping on uncomfortable flights.
- Compression socks or stockings – this is perfect, especially on long flights. It aids in blood circulation, preventing DVT blood clots and the swelling of the lower legs and feet.
- Ear plugs or noise-canceling headset – perfect to drown out the noise from the plane engine and crying babies.
- Vaseline or lubricating nasal spray – my regular readers have heard me regurgitate this a million times. It is also my no.1 must-pack item of the 16 essential items to pack in your carry-on. I will never board a plane without applying it. Greasing your nose prevents the dehydration of your nasal cavity. The dryness of the air in the plane causes the inner lining of the nostril to dry out, and tiny cracks develop. As a result, the germs circulating on the plane enter these cracks and you become sick on vacation. This hack has been working great for me for many years.
- Sleep mask – this is your lights-out sleep-aid when you want to rest or sleep. It keeps the overhead and window lights out when your seatmates want them on.
- Lip balm & hand cream – dry skin is another problem when travelling, because of dehydration and or air on onboard. For that reason, cracked or dry lips and hands are also prevalent. Therefore, be sure to have your lip balm and hand cream with you, to moisturize your lips and hands throughout your journey.
- Gum – chewing gum is perfect for those who suffer from “airplane ear”. Because of the buildup of pressure in the ear, the eardrum pops and pains during take-off and landing. Be aware that chewing gum also gives gas, so chew at the appropriate time and not the entire flight.
- A Cardigan or a large Scarf/shawl – this is ideal during the flight and for long and cold airport layovers. Whether day or night, it gets cold during flights at high altitudes. So, if your airline does not provide a blanket, you can experience an extremely cold and uncomfortable flight. Therefore, have a cardigan, scarf, or shawl with you, and big enough to keep you warm.
- · Sunglasses – you do not want to risk having your sunglasses in your checked bag only to receive them in pieces, also if you arrive in a country during the day, you will most likely need them when exiting the airport especially after a red-eye flight.
13. Copies of travel Documents
Have a copy of the biometric page of your passport (page with photo), visa page, and any other Id cards you are travelling with, in case you lose your originals. Notwithstanding this, have copies of your hotel reservation and confirmation documents at hand because when you enter a country, T.S.A. most times will request proof of a return ticket and or hotel confirmation bookings.
Some countries are still requesting documentation for Covid-19 vaccination, exemption documents, etc. Remember, do not place the copies in your checked bag in case of lost or late delivery or luggage.
14. A Water bottle
The travellers who can consume tap water without issues, should travel with an empty water bottle. It is a practical and economic hack, especially if you are on a budget (see 30 travel hacks for a perfect trip).
Therefore, the obvious choice is to walk with a water bottle, even better, a retractable water bottle (convenient and takes up less space) and fill up after the security checkpoint. For additional water safety, without worrying about bacteria or germs, you can also travel with a Steripen to sterilize your water.

15. Sleep aid, Jet lag, or Motion sickness Remedies
If you suffer from any in-flight-related issues such as fear of flying, claustrophobia, restlessness, motion sickness, jet lag, etc., then come prepared with your remedies before boarding. These unfavorable effects are most prevalent on long-haul flights (see how to survive and prepare for a long-haul flight).
I have three “quick-fixers” I never leave home without; salted prunes, preserved ginger, and a local mint/candy that helps with motion sickness, upset stomach and instantly stops any cough. Whatever does the trick for you, be sure it is in your carry-on bag.
16. A mini Nail Clipper and or an Emery board
These items are mainly for those of us who are still rocking natural nails (I am not sure if acrylic nails are affected). It is another absolute must-have item. During travel, because of hustling, dragging luggage, or just dry nails (due to unmoisturized hands).
Splitting or breaking nails are bound to happen. I have experienced this many times. It seems to be one of my unfortunate travel norms. Undoubtedly, having a broken, jagged nail with no way to fix it is one of the most annoying things to experience. Hence the reason why I never travel without including both a nail clipper and emery board in my carry-on.
Bottom Line
Whether a rookie traveller or a pro, a well-organized carry-on can determine your flight comfort. Not only that but how well you adjust and cope with travel incidents such as lost luggage. Remember, if you have a handheld luggage scale at home, pack the main essentials and weigh them.
This way, you keep your carry-on within the stipulated weight and avoid being frazzled at the airport bag drop. You can find more helpful information on travel-packing in my Travel blogs. Hi. Cory you always write good information. Thank you. I like it all very good writer.
Thank you Hasan. I appreciate the feedback.
It is very useful to know some of these things. It is good to have a phone or laptop that always has power. I have a thing to power up with bike pedals, plus get exercise at the same time. I would bring a lot of non perishable food, and junk food, since it could cost a lot to eat out every time. A very good read as always by
