No country is 100% safe. With the continuous movement of people, many once-safe countries are now experiencing crimes or an increase in it. However, many have drastic laws and rigid enforcement to deter any would-be-criminal from breaking them, thus lowering the crime rate. As a solo traveller, I have never had any security issues in any country because most were fairly safe. I chose these 50 safest countries around the world from the 80-plus I visited, based on how secure I felt, and what I experienced during my stay.

1. ICELAND - REYKJAVIK

Iceland is a Nordic European island nation in the North Atlantic, known as the Land of Fire and Ice. It is renowned as the most peaceful and safest country on earth. Instantly, I felt it upon arrival in its biggest city and capital, Reykjavik. Iceland is a safe country because it has a comprehensive social welfare system, and a high standard of living with a small population. It has a low crime rate because violent and petty crimes are very low or rare.

Moreover, the country has a well-respected, efficient, and effective law enforcement unit to protect its population. For these reasons, it is also one of the happiest countries worldwide. Therefore, it is easy to assume that contented people are less likely to commit crimes. Because of these factors, Iceland provides a safe and welcoming environment for its residents and visitors. Hence the reason it takes the No. 1 spot on the Global Peace Index list which measures crime, peacefulness, political security, and violence.

Singapore is in Southeast Asia, and its capital is also called Singapore. It is the fifth most peaceful country worldwide and very disciplined for several reasons: Singapore has stringent laws and harsh penalties not only for littering but especially for crimes (including the death penalty for drug trafficking). The police force is well-respected, visible, and the no-nonsense type. Even the locals are proactive in assisting and maintaining community watch groups in unison with law enforcement.

As I previously wrote, Singapore is one of the 23 cleanest countries worldwide, contributing to its safe and alluring environment. It also ranks 5th on the Global Peace Index list, which measures crime, peacefulness, political security, and violence. Furthermore, Singaporeans enjoy a high standard and quality of life, with excellent education, healthcare, and infrastructure which reduces the motivation for criminal behaviour. 3. VATICAN CITY

Vatican City is a sovereign country just a few kilometers from Rome, Italy. It does not have a capital and is the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church with the Pope as the head. It is considered safe for several reasons: The population is small so it is easy to manage and monitor, and only the workers and families of the guards live there. There is a high security presence in and around Vatican City because the Swiss Guard (the world’s smallest army) is responsible for the Pope’s security and maintaining order throughout the country.

Additionally, because of its size, they tightly control the borders and entry points. Moreover, the residents and workers work with law enforcement to keep it safe. For these reasons, Vatican City, the smallest country in the world, is one of the safest countries and crime is almost non-existent, therefore, making it very safe for visitors.

41. MONTENEGRO – PODGORICA, BUDVA, & TIVAT

The Republic of Montenegro is a small Balkan country along the central Mediterranean and within Southeastern Europe, and its capital is Podgorica. Furthermore, the Albanian hospitality was so overwhelming that I declared Albania is the most hospitable country in Europe. As a solo traveller, I walked alone day and night and never felt unsafe, nor experienced nor heard of any unfortunate occurrences during my stay.

Albania has effective and efficient law enforcement, with friendly and helpful police officers throughout the city. However, they appeared more like peacekeepers than police officers anticipating criminal activities, because they know crimes are low in the city.

Nonetheless, it added another layer of security in the city. Moreover, Albania’s tourist-friendly policies have made significant efforts to boost tourism which include ensuring the safety of visitors.

Besides, crimes like armed robbery by knife or more so gunpoint in Morocco are unheard of, because only the police are allowed to have guns in Morocco. Furthermore, they do not exempt any business owners or high officials, so a gun-toting bandit will be very unusual. Even more, Morocco has one of the most stable governments in North Africa which helps maintain overall security.
