ALBANIA IS THE MOST HOSPITABLE COUNTRY IN EUROPE

ALBANIA IS THE MOST HOSPITABLE COUNTRY IN EUROPE

The Republic of Albania is in Southern Europe in the Balkans, and its capital is Tirana. The head of state is the President, and the head of government is the Prime Minister. Albania is famous for its bunkers and has about 173,000 – 750,000 throughout the country, built by the former communist dictator. The country has many castles, archaeological sites, and its unique Albanian Alps. Albania is one of the ten poorest countries in Europe, but from my observation, it doesn’t appear this way. However, what stood out for me most about Albania was the affordable cost of food, accommodation, and transport and mainly their hospitality. Furthermore, the Albanian hospitality was so overwhelming I declare Albania is the most hospitable country in Europe, especially since I have been to all European countries save six of the fifty-one. ENTRY INTO ABOUT TIRANA, ALBANIA

Entry into Tirana International Airport Nene Tereza, often referred to as Rinas Airport (named after Mother Teresa), was a breeze. The airport is small, modest and the only international airport in Albania. I saw no duty-free shops upon entry but only in the Departure section of the airport (I did not depart from this airport). It reminds me of the one in Havana, Cuba, because of their many similarities, such as the entry door from the plane/tarmac straight to Immigration. The airport staff, customs, immigration officers, and even taxi drivers were all pleasant and friendly.

As I previously wrote, often, when the airport staff is hospitable, 95% of the time it is a good indicator that so is most of population. The airport did not have a crowd because many big airlines do not fly there. Therefore, the lines were short…. just the way I like them.

The Immigration section was small, and the Officers were quite pleasant and very welcoming (even the officer in the opposite booth was smiling at me as if to say welcome). The Immigration officer asked no questions except about the length of stay. No request for proof of accommodation or return ticket etc., a quick stamp, and “welcome to Albania”. Luggage pickup was straightforward, and I was outside in less than 15 minutes. No final customs luggage search was in place, and I was off to get my transport to the city.

TRANSPORT OPTIONS TO THE CITY OF TIRANA

Transportation from Tirana International Airport to the city center is by bus (airport bus and shuttle bus) or taxi. There are no Rideshares or online taxis like Bolt, Lyft, or Uber in Tirana. The taxis are the most expensive but reasonable especially compared to the rest of Europe. It takes a maximum of 30 minutes to the city center (taxis approximately 20 minutes) and you can pay in Euro, USD. or Pounds if you do not wish to convert your money at the airport.

WHY VISIT ALBANIA?

Why visit Albania? Some people hear about a country’s history and envision war and unrest etc. (brings back memories of beautiful Vietnam) and never the factual reality of the country. I wanted to visit Albania out of pure curiosity. It is one of the cheaper European countries, and visa-free entry made it an even easier choice.

From what I saw at the airport, my assumption that it was not a tourist destination was wrong. The residents told me that Tirana is a popular tourist destination, especially during the summer. That’s because Albania has some of the nicest, if not the best beaches in Europe.

Usually, I am never happy to see a city filled with many tourists, but I was delighted to see this in Tirana, especially during the low travel period. Why did I feel this way toward this country? Similar to when I was about to visit Moldova some years ago, when many asked why I chose to visit that country (as though it was unworthy of a visit), my response was why not visit Moldova!? Then I went, saw and loved it. I felt the same towards Tirana, Albania.

Albania is not a country you hear many travellers talk about or add to their bucket lists. However, I am sure that after reading this article, many more travellers might add it to their bucket-friendly destinations list. Please note the low travel season seems to be the rainiest months (end of October to early December).

ABOUT THE CITY OF TIRANA

Tirana is an energetic, safe, and historical city. It is certainly not a grey, dull or depressing city, as some might think. Skanderbeg Square is in the city center and is the main focal point of it. They named the square after the Albanian national hero Gjergj Kastrioti Skenderbeu. His statue on a horse is prominently on display, reminiscent of one of the most revered people to resist the Ottoman invasion of Albania. It is the main square where many visitors gather, and the city host many events. There is also free Wi-Fi in this square.

Tirana is home to many colourful Ottoman and post-Soviet-era architectures. It comprises many cultural institutions such as the National Opera and Ballet Theatre, the National Library, the National Museum, and other architectures. The city has many bars, restaurants, and hang-out spots, and always filled with visitors day and night (even during my week of non-stop rain). It is a non-pretentious city and very down-to-earth, just like its people. The availability and abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables at stalls at almost every corner were quite appeasing and so cheap. Another noticeable thing in Tirana is the number of money exchange shops in the city. It appears there is one in between every three to four other businesses. It is definitely a positive sign.

IMPORTANT TIPS YOU MUST KNOW BEFORE VISITING ALBANIA

Here are some other important Tips You Should know about Albania;

  • The languages spoken – Albanian (Shqip) others are English, Greek, German and French.
  • Official currency – Albanian Lek

Exchange Rate:

1.00 USD = 118.97 Lek.

1.00 Euro = 116.62 Lek.

1 Pound = 132.86 Lek.

  • Mini-buses are the primary means and are the most popular form of transport in Albania.
  • Albanians love coffee. There is an overwhelming amount of coffee shops there.
  • 70% of the country is mountainous.
  • Albania is predominantly Islam/Muslim at almost 60% and Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox. This makes Albania a religiously tolerant country. In 2014, the Pope also praised it for this reason.
  • Raki/Rakia is the national drink of Albania. Be warned, the one made in the villages is three times more potent than the normal Rakia. You can find this drink in Bulgaria, but Albania’s Rakia is unique.
  • Albania is a member of NATO but not of the European Union.
  • Many Albanians refer to their country as Shqiperi (translated as The Land of the Eagles) using their mother country’s tongue.
  • In head movements, no means Yes, and yes means No. Similarly, to Bulgarians, shaking your head up and down means yes for us but for Albanians, it means No. left to right means no or not in agreement, for Albanians, it means Yes. However, this practice is changing, especially with the younger generation.
  • Albanians consider themselves descendants of the ancient Illyrian.
  • For McDonald’s lovers, there isn’t that fast-food chain in Albania. They told me they did not welcome it. However, the fast-food chain KFC and Domino’s Pizza is there.
  • Not because you don’t need a Schengen visa for the rest of Europe means you don’t need one for Albania. It is not part of Schengen. So check before you travel because you might need one.
  • Almost all the cars in Albania are BMW, Volkswagen, and Mercedes Benz. Reason being? Besides the fact they are strong cars that can hold up to Albania’s bad roads. Albanians are entrepreneurial, so after working in another country, they take back a Mercedes Benz to sell. At least, it is what they told me when I asked why there so many high-end cars in a poor country.
  • Unlike some rich European countries, Tirana has free Wi-Fi in public areas and is unrestricted at most restaurants. What would be the point of locking it?
  • Albania has the cheapest and fastest internet in all of Europe.
  • From what I have seen, Albanians are rough drivers. Anything goes on the roads, especially at roundabouts. Extra precaution is necessary as a pedestrian or if you will drive there. Besides, there are so many cars on the roads, that serious traffic jams are the norm, and finding parking in the city is almost impossible.
  • Mother Teresa is the country heroine. Even though she was born in Skopje, Macedonia, her descendants were Albanians.
  • More Albanians live in other countries than in their homeland

ABOUT THE PEOPLE ALBANIA

Albanians are super-sweet and very patriotic people. The prevalence of their flag (big and small) is almost everywhere in the country. No matter their status in life, they all confess their love for their country. They related to me they are also happy to see tourists in their country bringing in foreign exchange. This tells you they have their country’s best interest at heart. Albanians will go all out to welcome you and help you. It does not matter, old or young. All are helpful and happy to make your stay a memorable one. Everyone in Albania treats you like family, hence my reason for saying Albania is the most hospitable country in Europe.

Albanians are usually the ones to smile first and will walk up to you and strike up a conversation, and nooo, not to ask you for anything. It just shows money does not make anyone happy, it is all about being content with what you have. Because I have been to many prosperous European countries and many people always appeared burdened and unhappy. Even though there are beggars and homeless people in Albania, I saw fewer of them than in many so-called “rich European countries”.

Government building in Tirana city

Testament to the Albanian generosity was the big pre-Christmas concert they organised and held at Skanderbeg Square to offer financial help to their Ukrainian brothers and sisters. Even though they are not rich, they try to assist others. Another thing I should point out…this is for the ladies; the Albanian men are super-cute, slender (no enormous bellies), and handsome (kind of reminds me of the men in Moldova). Also, from observation, the male population is very young. I saw more young men than old throughout the city.

ABOUT SAFETY AND SECURITY IN TIRANA, ALBANIA

Forget the propaganda about Albania not being safe. I was there alone and felt 100% safe. If I can feel 20% as safe and secure in my country as I did in Tirana, Albania, then some of my anxiety will disappear. I walked alone day and night and never felt unsafe, nor experienced nor heard of any unfortunate occurrences during my week’s stay.

Police officers were most present in the city, which added another layer of security. Might I add, they are super-friendly officers. Even though many do not speak English, they were always pleasant and helpful when stopped to ask for directions. It felt they were more like security guards than police officers because most did not have a gun, and their mannerisms were more of peacekeepers than crime prevention officers. However, no country is 100% crime-free. Even though I felt safe and at ease, I still took precautions.

Albania has a culture of hitchhiking. That alone tells you that it is safe. I have met many locals and travellers who do it and swear it is safe. I will not hitchhike in any country, but that it is so common in Albania says a lot about safety and security.

HOW EXPENSIVE ARE THE ACCOMMODATIONS, MEALS, AND TRANSPORTATION?

The costs for everything in Albania are affordable (even though Albanians disagree). This includes meals, accommodation, taxis, and all public transport. The prices for accommodation in a pleasant apartment or medium-range hotel, including breakfast, are less than what you will pay for a hostel in many other European cities.

Meals in Tirana are relatively cheap. You can have two or more solid meals daily on a budget of USD 15.00 or less. Compared to other European cities, that’s breakfast or burgers and fries.

There is no rail system or trains in Albania. To get around the city, you will rent a car, take a taxi, or use the Furgon, regular buses, and taxis. The Furgon is an unlicensed mini-bus or van, and the most popular way to travel in Albania. They do not have a fixed schedule, and you can flag them down once you are going to the same destination and they have room. Unlike the Furgons, the regular buses have a fixed schedule and you must visit the bus stations or bus stops.

ALBANIAN FOODS YOU MUST PARTAKE OF

Albanian cuisine is a combination of the Mediterranean and Balkans. It is famous primarily for its healthy and fresh ingredients such as vegetables, meats, fish, yogurt, and milk. It is like some meals I have had in Greece and even Turkey. Unlike many bland foods in some European countries, Albania is the opposite. The dishes are not only economical but properly seasoned and taste delish.

Here are some exciting and traditional dishes you must partake of in Albania.

  1. Tarator (cold cucumber, dill, and yogurt soup served with bread, feta cheese, or grilled veggies).
  2. Fasule/white Beans (Albanians love beans)
  3. Imam Bajalid/Bayildi (baked Melongene/Aubergine filled with onion, tomatoes, and olive oil).
  4. Qifqi (boiled and seasoned rice balls, then fried in olive oil).
  5. Byrek/Burek (a popular Albanian street food made with fried or baked phyllo pastry, stuffed with spinach, meat, sweet pumpkin, and cottage cheese, and cut in triangles).
  6. Fergese or Summer stew  (a dish made in a clay pot with bell peppers, garlic, tomatoes, cheese, and sometimes chopped liver, they serve it with homemade bread).
  7. Tave Kosi/Tava e Kosit (similar to a casserole, it’s a dish made with lamb meat, mixed with rice, and topped with yogurt sauce).
  8. Petulla (this is a fried, chewy dough treat sprinkled with powdered sugar, similar to doughnuts).
  9. Boza (thick malt drink made from fermented corn, barley, millet, and wheat, they serve it hot or cold).
  10. Hirre/Whey (cheese water) Below is my story about this drink.

Here is my scoop with Hirre/Whey.

Hirre a popular Albanian drink/treat they enjoy. I mentioned it but do not recommend it unless you previously had it and liked it. It is called Whey, the water that remains after the curd forms into cheese.

I was having lunch at a really a really nice restaurant, and the server brought freshly made cheese to the table and a pitcher of what looked exactly like lemonade (which I did not order). Of course I was delighted to receive it because I love lemonade. I poured a glass and indulged while I awaited my meal. Well, you guessed it, it was not lemonade. Needless to say, I nearly spat it across the room as it quickly returned from my chest to my mouth. I held my decorum, swallowed quickly, then stuffed a piece of bread in my mouth. No, I did not like the taste one bit. If this is your thing, enjoy it, but if you have never had it and would like to try it, then request it when you visit.

It could be another reason why most Albanians (especially the males) are not overweight because Whey is a good source of protein and aids in weight loss.

SUMMARY

Albania is a budget traveller’s goldmine. I think Albania should be a tourist hub because it has so much to offer, especially for the traveller who has post-pandemic stress and wants to plan a vacation with small money. With its delicious cuisine, low prices, and extremely hospitable people, you cannot go wrong. Additionally, its many interesting and historical sites, beautiful landscapes, and watercourses make it a nature-lovers escape.

Albania offers the perfect holiday. I was extremely pleased that I visited, and would love to re-visit (during a less-rainy period). Because in most countries, it is difficult to find the perfect combination of friendly, hospitable people, low prices, and most importantly, safety. I am sure after your visit you will agree that Albania is the most hospitable country in Europe. Just a gentle reminder, be prepared for lots of rain during this period. That was the only drawback, however, the warmth of the people dispelled the damper of the rain. Enjoy!
