CHOOSE WHAT YOU LOVE DOING

Quitting your job to explore remote work opportunities might seem stressful. However, before the idea gets you too stressed, know that it is possible to travel and work. Because presently, many travel addicts are successfully doing so.

Travelling and working at the same time is difficult. It takes hard work, dedication, and passion to accomplish such a feat. Remember, success does not come overnight, so you must choose something you truly love and not what someone else is doing. When you are passionate about your work or profession, it feels more like a hobby than actual work.

To successfully work and travel, recondition your mind. You will not have to worry about a boss if you are working for yourself, but you must commit yourself to what you do and the results. That means no work, no pay. Because technically you will be on vacation, and you may find it difficult to get away from the surrounding distractions to get some projects done.

It is best to do this before embarking on your travels and continue adding excellent and engaging content while travelling. However, remember  active sites need maintenance and regular content updates always. So prepare to put in the work as well. If you are passionate about travelling, then you should find a job that allows you to travel. A flight attendant is one such job, male or female, this is perfect for those who love flying and meeting new people. Their accumulated free tickets take them to half the journey and costs, if they choose to go on vacation in countries further away. It is a tiring job, however it is still free travel.

8. Photographer/Videographer or Content photographer

As a travel lover and explorer, over time, you have visited many countries and locations. I am also certain you have seen and captured pictures and videos of many gorgeous and breathtaking scenery, subjects, events, sports, etc.

FYI, as a freelance photographer/videographer, you are self-employed, and not working for anyone. Therefore, you can sell or contract out your work to clients at your price. Businesses like hotels, tour companies, media, and even the service industry will pay for gorgeous shots and videos for advertising and documentaries, etc.

A content photographer is somewhat different because you upload your photos (once approved) on the company’s platform. You receive payment when companies or individuals purchase your videos and pictures. Individuals, website owners, companies, and others need them because they relay the story much better. Content photography pays, especially if you have some one-of-a-kind shots and videos. Two such companies of which I am a content photographer are Shutterstock and iStock/Getty Images. Check online for others like Alamy, and others to register.

9. A Street Performer (Busking)

What is your performing skill? Can you dance, sing, do magic tricks? Whatever your skill, I guarantee you will make money because it is a full-time profession that takes the performer worldwide. Busking in many countries is freedom of speech, and therefore, no need for a license (first check the law in the country).

The more peculiar the performance, the more rewarding it is. I have seen from mimes to real-life statues. Some so unbelievable, especially those I have seen in Lisbon, Portugal. Don’t deter yourself from doing this if it is your thing. Many street performers are travellers themselves, who are “hustling” and making lots of money from tips and even paid performances at some resorts’ creative night shows.

10. Work at a Hostel

Many hostels will offer you free accommodation and even pay you to do front desk chores or whatever your skill might be. Most importantly, if most of their guests come from a country whose language is the same as yours, you will be an asset to help with the language barrier. Typically, it is an excellent part-time option, which leaves you time for exploring. When this gig is up, you can move on to another country or location.

11. Web Developer and Designer

Look at the internet, you will see thousands of websites. These sites undergo continual upgrades, designs, and regular maintenance. Professional web developers and designers receive excellent pay and are always in high demand. Persons with this specialized skill set their prices and work remotely as long as they have a computer and internet.

12. Teach English (in person or online)

Teaching English is one of the more popular travel jobs. Depending on the country, you may need a degree or simply a Teaching English as a Foreign Language Certification (TEFL). Check online for the certificate, cost, and the country’s requirements. There are many countries to choose from, the possibilities are endless, and the money is excellent. Decide if you wish it to be short or long term before you move on to another country.

If you prefer to teach online, there are platforms and apps like 51Talk, Tandem, Cambly, among others, that facilitate this. You teach using video calling to people worldwide with flexible timetables. You may also need an ESL/TEFL certification to qualify.

13.Become a Masseuse

If your hands are like magic, and you know how to hit the right spots, then a masseuse is another easily available travel job. Almost everyone needs a soothing or deep muscle massage. We especially need it after those long flights or sightseeing tours. If you are not a pro, massage courses are cheap and accessible in every country. You can learn and develop your skills in a quick time, to become an expert masseuse.

14.Teach Skiing, Rowing, Scuba Diving or Swimming

Are you a professional at diving, skiing, swimming, or scuba diving? Not only a pro but are you passionate about any of these skills? Then you can make crazy money teaching any of these to locals and or visitors while you are also on vacation. Many people do not know how to do most of these. Something as simple as swimming or as complex as skiing are activities they wish to learn.

15.Affiliates Marketing

If you have a website (but not a requirement) you can do affiliate marketing. If you have a popular following either on YouTube, Instagram, etc., it is an excellent platform to promote goods and services you endorse. It is easy to do, as long as you spend some time promoting the items, then sit back and watch the magic work.

Affiliates marketing means you are the middle man promoting a particular company brand, goods, and services and receiving a commission for every sale made. Best of all, you can do this from anywhere worldwide.

16.Become Travel Nurse

Nurses are always in demand. Many agencies and countries recruit nurses and also provide lodging. I am not recommending they leave one country to move to another and deal with the same hours and stress. No, anyone who can afford to do so, can employ private nurses. They hire them to travel with the elderly, those with health issues, or the incapacitated.

Nurses have choices of countries to work in and receive contracts for an average of three to six months in the U.S.A. and many countries worldwide. They can move to a different country when their contacts have expired. That is because there are shortages of nurses worldwide. So, they have the opportunity to relocate and work in countries of their choice.

17.Work as an Online Travel Agent or Travel Advisor

Providing invaluable service and advice to others based on your travel experience is essential to newbie travellers. Those who want a personalized experience will pay you to recommend, organize and plan a vacation on their behalf.

It will provide a personal touch because, unlike most travel agents, you have been to the country. That means you have first-hand knowledge, experience and can recommend hotels, flights, restaurants accordingly.

18. Work as a Travel Companion/Flight Companion

Businesses are specializing in this field and will recruit you as a dependable travel companion. Whether it is a business trip or accompanying seniors, minors, disabled loved ones on flights, it is a travel opportunity.

There are also trips for medical help or accompanying someone on vacation who is too intimidated to do so alone. Other people have flight anxiety and need a companion for support on their flight.

19. Get an Australian or New Zealand Work permit

Even though the cost of living in these countries is high, work possibilities are high as well. Depending on your country of origin and age (in most cases under age 45), it is even easier to get into this and get a work visa.

Another option is to apply for a “Working Holiday Visa.” This visa is for twelve months and will allow you to leave and re-enter Australia as many times as you wish within this period. The visa assists you to work, providing you do not stay longer than six months with any one employer.

How do I qualify, and what are the requirements?

  • Have no criminal record
  • Be in good health
  • Proof that you are between the ages of 18 and 35
  • Have no dependent children travelling with you into Australia
  • Show that you have sufficient funds to sustain yourself until you exit the country (sometimes proof of AUD5,000 is a requirement).

20.Become a Seasonal Fruit Picker/Farm Worker

Hey, as long as it is an opportunity to visit a new country, work, and receive a salary, why not?! Seasonal Fruit Pickers/Farm Workers receive excellent salaries, and the employer also provides free meals and lodging. Many countries hire people worldwide to do farm work, like picking apples, strawberries, corn, etc. Countries like Canada, New Zealand, and others are ideal choices.

Besides, you will also meet other workers from around the globe. On your days off, you can do some sightseeing and learn about the country’s food, culture and people. It seems very common for many backpackers and travellers to lean towards this type of seasonal work.

WHAT TO DO AFTER FINDING YOUR TRAVEL JOB

You have chosen the travel-free option and have secured a job in another country. You do not want to burden yourself and your finances with expenses that are non-beneficial to you back home. So, make some changes that will keep more money in your pocket and towards living your travel dream.

Here are some additional steps you can adopt to spend less and save more;

If you have a house, you can lease/rent it out and get a steady monthly income. If renting an apartment, cancel the lease and sell your household items or put them into storage. The same goes for your car, it makes no financial sense to be living and working elsewhere and paying insurance or car payments back home.

ADJUSTING TO YOUR NEW TRAVEL CAREER AND LIFE

You are now living and adjusting to your move to a new country. However, you must make some changes to fulfill this dream. Go smaller and more compact when finding an apartment. Focus on comfort and functionality over bigger and more costly. Smaller means fewer furnishings, less hassle, and fewer costs of course, as you channel your resources to building your new career.

Expect less, spend less. We are part of a materialistic culture where everyone expects you to keep up with the latest gadgets, trends, and styles. People obsess with always competing with or “keeping up with the Joneses.” Keep your expectations in check, and do not go overboard when spending. Live within your means! This way, you will spend less on unnecessary things and more on establishing your new travel dream and career.

Avoid debts and save more. Which means do not put yourself in debt by borrowing. If you don’t have it, don’t spend it. Avoid borrowing and racking up credit card debts. Mentally prepare yourself to get accustomed to living with less. Therefore, the more you make, should be the more you save, unlike those who make more and spend more.

CONCLUSION

Many possibilities exist for those who hate their 8 to 4 jobs. So if you only get a two or three-week annual vacation leave, hate your boss, traffic jams, and or your mundane life, then remote work is perfect for you. If you are a travel addict, stop dreaming and get ready to take a bold step towards living the dream, your dream! 1. Very useful information for those who have the travel bug and need to supplement their income as well. It sounds very exciting to be moving from country to country but it must be hard work adjusting as well! Some of the jobs may look glamorous but are arduous as well. I guess you will really savour your days off then! Very well-researched and well-written article. As always: Good work, Cory!

    1. Thank you Liz-Ann. True most may look glamorous but are indeed arduous. In life, many things appear this way but if you love what you do and don’t see it as work but as a passion, you will not feel the pain. It will be a fair trade-off for your goal you are what you trying to achieve and enjoy.

    1. You are correct there that you need money to travel, however, you do not need to be rich to travel, as previously written in my post HOW TO SAVE MONEY TO TRAVEL..it is all about prioritizing. The great thing about travel for/and work is that it you are “killing two birds with one stone” You get to travel because of work or travel and work if you are self employed in the right field.

  2. As usual cory excellent information I know 2 persons who live the nomadic life and also a fruit picker in New Zealand, and they love it. Excellent tips for all here.. thanks once again and your style of writing ..very easy to read.

    1. Hi Xamina, I do tho appreciate the supportive words. The travel and work programme is real for many people who just cannot stay put for long. Others travel with their work (self employed) and enjoy their lives.

  3. Hi once again you have open my eyes to new things I can do as a solo traveler and still make that few bucks to keep me going, it a pleasure to read these tips and to share some, one day I hope I can put some these into practice.

  4. Excellent information for travellers and non-travellers. Very easy to read and understand. This is very good information also for those who want to know what skills are accepted worldwide

  5. Hello Cory! It’s so interesting subject! It’s helpful. Thanks for the excellent information, You are really an excellent writer. no matter how long your articles they are never boring. yet educational.

  6. Good to know there was so many jobs where you can do while travelling. Very educational and good information. a definite share.

  7. Very interesting. I never imagined there was so many jobs where you can travel while working. I always thought you would have to be a rock star, or actor, or have a high class job to do that. I know one guy who goes to the west coast to plant trees every year. He has been doing that for years now , and he loves it. This is a great article Cory. You are truly the greatest travel expert.

    1. Ha.! thanks Joel…had it not been for COVID-19 I might have been out there working and travelling. In the mean time work online and wait..There are many other options as well, you just have to mentally adjust and be prepared to learn new things and stick with it.

  8. I always want to be a flight attendant. It seems they have the most fun. Travel everywhere and get paid
Due to my age now, never tried to apply and see the requirements
May be when I retire, I can offer free service to seniors to show them around

    1. The flight attendant dream has left many of us a long time ago, myself included. However, a tour guide is a good idea for you upon retirement. In Vietnam many of the tour guides are retirees and they are very fit and have much experience.
